Preface Coastal marine ecosystems are increasingly affected by environmental stress and degradation due to pollution and other anthropogenic factors. A large number of research programmes have addressed these problems within various coastal regions and have produced highly useful comprehensive data-sets on environmental and biotic conditions within these systems. A growing number of new tools and methods for assessing the health of these systems have emerged as well. The time has come now to provide an international framework for the assessment and use of common methodologies and tools as a pathway to greater capacity building, information exchange, and quality control and ultimately as a basis for improving our understanding of global patterns of ocean ecosystem health. The development of sensitive, reliable, and broadly applicable indicators of ocean health is relevant to Chapter 40 (Information for Decision-Making) of the Agenda 21 of UNCED (United Nations Conference on Environment and Development), which calls for sustainable use of the ocean environment. In order to provide such a forum, an international workshop on " Indicators of Stress in the Marine Benthos " , jointly organized by the Foundation IMC – International Marine Centre ONLUS and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, was held in Torregrande-Oristano, Sardinia (Italy) October 8 th –9 th 2004. Key goals of the workshop were: (1) to exchange information on the scope and results …

The use of benthic indicators in Europe: from the Water Framework Directive to the Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
The Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) are the European umbrella regulations for water systems. It is a challenge for the scientific community to translate the principles of these directives into realistic and accurate approaches. The aim of this paper, conducted by the Benthos Ecology Working Group of ICES, is to describe how the principles have ...
متن کاملAssessment of Mercury Accumulation and Magnification in a Freshwater Food Chain: Sediment, Benthos and Benthivorous Fish
Background: Present study was conducted to measure the level of total mercury (tHg) in sediments, benthos and benthivorous fish (i.e., common carp) for determining Biota (Benthos)-Sediment Accumulation Factor (BSAF), as well as Biomagnification Factor (BMF) of tHg between two trophic levels of benthos and benthivorous fish caught from Sanandaj Gheshlagh Reservoir (SGR) in the west of Iran. Met...
متن کاملOxygen as a Driver of Early Arthropod Micro-Benthos Evolution
BACKGROUND We examine the physiological and lifestyle adaptations which facilitated the emergence of ostracods as the numerically dominant Phanerozoic bivalve arthropod micro-benthos. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS The PO(2) of modern normoxic seawater is 21 kPa (air-equilibrated water), a level that would cause cellular damage if found in the tissues of ostracods and much other marine fauna....
متن کاملPerformance of the Persian Gulf States rely on the Indicators of Sustainable Development of the Marine Environment
Due to the closed nature of the Persian Gulf, the transit of oil tankers and excessive utilization of the global standard, the environmental situation of the gulf has been endangered. It is necessary to promulgate the sea-based culture and marine economy and include their policies in the legislations of all eight countries of the Persian Gulf in order to achieve the sustainable development rega...
متن کاملIdentification and study of some ecological indicators of Scyphomedusae from coastal waters of Khuzestan and Hormozgan (the North of Persian Gulf)
Coastal waters of Khuzestan and Hormozgan provinces are very important in the fisheries industry. Due to of direct and indirect impacts of the Jellyfish on the dynamic of fish larvae and zooplankton, study of their population is very important. So that in this study scyphomedusae were collected in summer and winter of 2015 from 6 stations of coastal waters of Khuzestan and Hormozgan. Sampling w...
